About this unit

How to work through it

  1. Trace shapes on paper for transformations, label preimage and image.
  2. Know rules for reflections, rotations, translations on the coordinate plane.
  3. Similar figures: corresponding angles equal, sides proportional.
  4. Scale factor multiplies lengths; area scales by factor squared.
  5. Use patty paper or tracing for Topic 1 if visualizing is hard.

You should be able to

  • Perform and describe rigid transformations on the coordinate plane.
  • Identify congruent and similar figures.
  • Use scale factors with similar figures.
  • Apply transformations to solve problems.

Key words

Rigid transformation
A move that keeps size and shape: translation, reflection, or rotation.
Dilation
A transformation that resizes a figure by a scale factor.
Similar figures
Same shape, possibly different size; angles equal and sides proportional.
Transversal
A line that crosses two or more other lines.
