About this unit

How to work through it

  1. A function assigns exactly one output per input, test with tables.
  2. Plot points carefully; use a ruler for lines when graphing.
  3. Function notation f(x) means substitute x into the rule.
  4. Compare functions using tables and graphs side by side.
  5. Complete exercises before watching solutions.

You should be able to

  • Determine whether a relation is a function.
  • Evaluate functions using notation and tables.
  • Graph functions from tables and simple rules.
  • Compare rates of change from graphs.

Key words

Function
A rule that assigns exactly one output to each input.
Input / output
The value you put in (x) and the value you get out (y).
Vertical line test
If a vertical line hits a graph more than once, it is not a function.
Linear function
A function whose graph is a straight line; can be written y = mx + b.
