About this unit

How to work through it

  1. Do the same operation to both sides of an equation every time.
  2. Combine like terms on one side before isolating the variable.
  3. Check solutions by substituting back into the original equation.
  4. Multi-step word problems: define the variable in a sentence first.
  5. Practice until equation solving feels routine.

You should be able to

  • Solve multi-step linear equations including variables on both sides.
  • Solve equations with special cases (one solution, none, infinitely many).
  • Translate multi-step word problems into equations.
  • Verify solutions and interpret in context.

Key words

Linear equation
An equation whose variable is only to the first power.
Inverse operation
An operation that undoes another, like subtraction undoing addition.
No solution
An equation that is never true, like 3 = 5 after simplifying.
Infinitely many solutions
An equation true for every value, like 4 = 4 after simplifying.
