About this unit

How to work through it

  1. Slope = rise over run; label axes on every graph.
  2. Slope-intercept form y = mx + b: identify m and b from equations and graphs.
  3. Parallel lines share slope; perpendicular slopes are negative reciprocals.
  4. Write equations from graphs and word problems.
  5. Use graph paper for Topic 2 practice.

You should be able to

  • Find slope from graphs and two points.
  • Write equations in slope-intercept form.
  • Graph lines from equations.
  • Interpret slope and y-intercept in context.

Key words

Slope
The steepness of a line: rise over run, or change in y over change in x.
y-intercept
Where a line crosses the y-axis; the value of y when x = 0.
Slope-intercept form
y = mx + b, where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept.
Rate of change
How much one quantity changes for each unit change in another.
